Passive Fire Protection

Passive fire protection (PFP) is based on the principle of compartmentalisation and structural fire resistance. Compartmentalisation stops the spread of fire and structural fire resistance prevents the collapse of a building. Passive fire protection is capable of stopping the spread of fire and localising fire at the site of ignition, enabling occupants to vacate the building and biding valuable time for the fire service to arrive and tackle the fire.

Passive fire protection is generally grouped into three key areas:

1. Structural Fire Protection
In order to guard structural components like steel and joint systems comprised of varying materials, fireproofing is applied in the form of spray-on intumescents, endothermic materials such as gypsum-based plasters and cementitious products, mineral wool wraps and insulation. In the modern day new buildings are built with a high percentage of concrete to provide further structural fire protection.

2. Compartmentalisation
Compartmentalisation helps to limit the spread of fire by utilising fire barriers, fire walls, partitions and smoke barriers. Fire barriers include fire-rated walls, floors and ceilings made of concrete, combination wood, gypsum or masonry. Fire walls can also be grouped with structural fire protection due to the fact that if a building collapses on either side the wall will remain in position.

3. Opening Protection
Opening protection comprises fire doors and windows which assist a fire barrier in maintaining its fire resistance. Fire proof doors and windows work with structural fire protection and compartmentalisation to provide comprehensive fire protection and maximise evacuation time.

Passive fire protection is essential for domestic or commercial premises. Of course a domestic residence will have a smaller scale passive fire protection installation, with the extent of the installation based on the caution and budget of the owner. On analysis of the three sections of passive fire protection, one thing is clear; the word passive indicates a problem. Even though a fire can be contained, localised and evacuation time maximised, what would happen to occupants trapped within the immediate vicinity of the fire? And what would happen to the area of the building engulfed with fire by the time the fire service arrives on the scene? Without automatic fire protection, the risk to life and property damage is too great.

Automatic Fire Protection

Automatic fire protection compliments passive fire protection and significantly- almost completely – eradicates the risk of loss of life. Fire sprinklers are the ultimate fire fighter, providing maximum automatic fire protection at all times. If a fire is detected, it is contained and put out immediately, perhaps even before occupants have time to evacuate. Smoke particles will be suppressed, minimising the risk of those exiting the building being affected by smoke inhalation. There is no better way to tackle fire than immediately, with water, at the site of ignition.
