Fire Safety

Every person should be equipped with a good knowledge of fire safety in order to be able to react appropriately in the event of a fire. Fire always seems a world away from our lives. Fire is something we see on the TV news or read about in the paper. We have a tendency to ignore potential danger until it comes knocking on our door step, and sometimes this is tragically too late.

Basic Fire Safety Tips

Here is a list of 10-basic fire safety tips you can apply both at home and at work.

  1. Keep stairs clear of clutter to ensure a safe exit from the building
  2. When cooking keep things that can burn, such as dishtowels, paper or plastic bags and curtains at least three feet away from the range top.
  3. Regularly test smoke alarms and hold fire drills.
  4. Stay by the stove when cooking, especially when you are frying food.
  5. Unplug toaster ovens, coffee makers and other small appliances after using them.
  6. Keep appliances dry and away from water at all times.
  7. Don’t plug in too many appliances at once.
  8. Don't tie or knot cords. Don't let furniture sit on cords.
  9. Use the right light bulbs in all lamps and light fixtures.
  10. Blow out all candles before going to sleep or leaving the room.

Fire Safety Plan

Every work place will have a fire safety plan for employees to follow. The basis of the plan will be that each floor of the building has a designated fire exit and each staff team will have a designated meeting place outside of the building where a manager will take a headcount and register. These fire safety plan procedures should also be adapted for domestic residences. One member of a household should become the designated fire officer, responsible for identifying exit strategies and a safe assembly point away from the building. Smoke alarms should be tested regularly and potential hazards should be identified.

Permanently Eliminating the Danger of Fire

Fire safety tips are important and an awareness of the potential danger of fire is necessary for all. But tips and advice can only do so much, and no one can predict how and where a fire will break out, nor guarantee safety. In light of this, every home and work space should be equipped with automatic fire sprinklers to ensure that no one is killed or injured by fire. Fire sprinklers are the only active form of guaranteed protection against fire, and contrary to popular belief, fire sprinklers can be fitted in any building, not just new build homes and new commercial properties. Fire sprinklers save lives and protect property from the devastation of fire. No matter how proficient your fire safety knowledge is, you are not safe until you have automatic protection capable of immediately suppressing fire and eliminating danger.
