Poor access to water mains is a common issue for the fire service when arriving on the scene of a fire incident. This is particularly prevalent in multiple floor buildings such as apartment blocks, office buildings and tall houses. Another problem area for the fire service is low mains pressure from the point of connection. A dry riser installation will address both these issues by providing easy access to water on all floors of a building and by providing a high level of water pressure on each floor.
What Are Dry Risers?
Dry riser mains provide a readily available means
of delivering considerable quantities of water to prevent
the spread of fire. Dry risers comprise vertical pipes
and valves fitted into suitable fireproof enclosures.
Outlets are fitted at ground floor level to enable the
fire service to connect to the water supply.
Protect your high rise, apartment or other multiple
floor building from the ravages and damages of fire
by having a professional dry riser system installed.
What the Law Says About Dry Riser Installation
By law, dry risers have to have fire engine access within 18m of the dry riser inlet box. Dry riser systems are regulated in the UK by the Building (Minimum Standards) Regulations Act 2000. The regulation also stipulates that dry risers in occupied buildings have to be housed within a fire resistant shaft. In commercial property this is usually under the staircase of a fire exit.
Dry Risers and Automatic Fire Suppression
Dry risers complement fire
suppression systems such as fire sprinklers by enabling
the installers of the sprinklers to connect the system
to a water supply of balanced pressure on each floor.
It is of great importance for sprinklers to be fed a
high pressure of water to ensure maximum effectiveness.
