Poor access to water mains is a common issue for the fire service when arriving on the scene of a fire incident. What Are Dry Risers?

Dry risers comprise vertical pipes and valves fitted into suitable fireproof enclosures. Outlets are fitted at ground floor level to enable the fire service to connect to the water supply.

What the Law Says About Dry Riser Installation

By law, dry risers have to have fire engine access within 18m of the dry riser inlet box. Dry riser systems are regulated in the UK by the Building (Minimum Standards) Regulations Act 2000. The regulation also stipulates that dry risers in occupied buildings have to be housed within a fire resistant shaft. In commercial property this is usually under the staircase of a fire exit.
